A Garden Visit and Something New

A couple of weeks ago, while travelling to visit family and a little vacay, I had the opportunity to catch up with an old Clemson University classmate at his garden in Beech Island, SC. Jenks Farmer is an author, garden designer and a pretty darn good grower and authority on everything Crinum.

Jenks and I haven’t aged a bit from our Clemson University days 30 years ago

Since it was the end of January and coming off a little deep freeze, there wasn’t much growing in the garden. So, we retreated back to his garden office and while sipping coffee and enjoying some of his mom Gloria’s delicious, and I might add warm brownies, we did what horticulturists do, we talked about plants. And our prostates, it’s what old guys do. More about that later in the blog post.

A New Project

One thing we did discuss is an enterprise/dream that I’m starting, selling quality seeds produced and collected at Heritage Cottage Urban Nano Farm, Heritage Cottage Seeds. I grow tomato and pepper varieties that aren’t readily available. I especially like to grow old genetics in order to keep these varieties from disappearing. I’ll be sharing how I maintain seed purity and prevent cross pollination in a later post.

Currently I have available Aleppo, Calabrian, dwarf Tabasco, McDonald’s Thai pepper seed and Siberian and Heritage Cottage Orange tomato seed. Also, available are the really cool Heritage Cottage Urban Nano Farm coffee mugs and my first book Southern Gardening All Year Long. I have more seed being added for this spring and summer. Let me know what you think.

Now back to our discussion over coffee and brownies, did I say they were still warm, and I’m going to let Jenks regale our discussion, he tells it much than I would, with his blog post, “Old Guys Talk Tomatoes and Prostates”.
